Jon Rose - "China Copy"
CGR 01 (1998)
Jon Rose Originally to appear on Henry Kwok's Sound Factory Label in Hong Kong, but releases on JDK after financial problems upon returning Hong Kong to mainland China (We hope it is not a bad omen for the future of alternative music in the People's Republic). This is an hour long experimental radio Horspiel based on the 'Key Copiers of Beijing' and the People's Music Instrument Factory.

REVIEWS:
A review on China Copy - taken and translated from Senzor magazine:
Violinist/avant-garde musician Jon Rose has many musical faces. His experiments
with samples already resulted in many good, innovative, collage-piece. His
latest sampling-art can be heard on 'China Copy", released on Creamgardens, a
sub-label of JdK Productions. The material for the samples on this record comes
from various Chinese locations and situations.
We hear people copy keys for the cardboard box in which they live, dumpling
sellers, factory workers busy tuning the instruments they are making, Hong Kong
radio sounds, public speeches, street sounds, excerpts from a traditional
Chinese opera (with saw). Jon Rose completes these tracks with his experimental,
often improvised violin-playing, synthesizer, amplified bow and
computer-generated sounds. The result is the better, but hectic patchwork with a
couple of 'stilled' violin moments. The rhythmical percussion mostly comes from
samples which he has transformed into mechanical beats. Intelligent avant-garde
'pur sang'.
